KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri S. K. Devamany will propose to the Education Ministry for volunteerism in the school curriculum soon.
He said the move was necessary because the approach will enrich children both physically and mentally.
"The spirit of volunteerism needs to be nurtured at a young age as it will expose them to a critical thinking form (needed in real life)," he told reporters today after a handover launch of a modified vehicle, termed "off-road ambulance", to the Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA) along Jalan Kampung Pandan here.
The vehicle was sponsored by the Prime Minister's Department at a cost of RM150,000.
On the spirit of volunteerism, MVFRA chairman K. Balasupramaniam said the non-governmental organisation currently has 59 volunteers currently.
He said those who are interested to join as MVFRA member can peruse through its website at www.mvfra.org and will need to undergo a five-year training before being placed in an environmental disaster environment.
He added MVFRA is an internationally recognised with their work in Nepal, Indonesia and Iran.
