Police: Temple vandals are under influence of drugs or of unsound mind

GEORGE TOWN: Police believe the person or persons responsible for vandalising a Hindu temple in Bayan Baru were under the influence of drugs or of unsound mind.

Southwest district police chief Supt Lai Fah Hin however is not ruling anything out as investigations continue into the recent incident where a statue at the Dewa Sri Mathurai Veeran Temple was damaged.

"We are looking for those responsible for this act," he told theSun when contacted today.

The police were notified of the incident on Sunday after a passer-by noticed the damage and are now probing the incident under the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship.

Lai said the temple had been left vacant after the plot of land was purchased by a developer.

He said the temple committee was now looking for a suitable place to relocate the Hindu place of worship.

When contacted, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin said what happened was despicable and should not have occurred.

"I urge the police to find the perpetrators," he told theSun via text and added that religious sensitivities should be respected by all.
