KUALA LUMPUR: The eight-year-old girl who was critically wounded by a stray bullet after her mother was shot dead in Taman OUG, off Jalan Kelang Lama here on Wednesday is in stable condition.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa said today that the child underwent a second surgery at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) to remove a bullet slug lodged in her liver.
He said a post-mortem on the child's mother, identified as Wong Siu Ling, a 32-year-old real estate agent was also conducted today.
Rusdi said police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the killing but have narrowed it down to a business she managed with her husband.
He said the woman's husband runs a cosmetics business but police learnt that he was also involved in other ventures.
"We are looking at every aspect of the case to determine the motive but our investigations will be centred on the couple's businesses," he said.
It is learnt that her husband who is a Datuk in his 30's had recently returned from a business trip in China.
On Wednesday at 2.30pm, the woman was driving her Toyota Vellfire with her five children aged between two and 13 and their maid along a row of shophouses on Jalan Hujan Emas 4 when a motorcyclist and his pillion rider rode up to the driver's side and opened gunfire.
The woman suffered a gunshot to her neck and was killed at the scene while her daughter who was seated in the front passenger seat sustained injuries from another gunshot and was sent to the UMMC.
Based on witness accounts, police believe the killers had waited near the crime scene for the victim's car to pass.
The victim who earlier had lunch at a nearby restaurant and was to leave for Penang for a holiday with her children.
Meanwhile, the deceased's sister, when met at the hospital mortuary denied allegations that the victim's husband had hired the killer.
She explained that the deceased's husband is in fact a family man and someone who cares for the deceased and her family members very much.
"The theory about my brother-in-law hiring someone to kill my sister is baseless and I appeal for those responsible to stop spreading these rumours," she said.
She said she and the deceased, along with two other siblings were discussing about details of their next gathering just 30 minutes prior to the shooting.
Over the past three weeks, there were two other cases pulled off in similar fashion by gunmen who are believed to be hired killers.
On June 16, a 44-year-old businessman from Kajang was shot dead by a lone gunman on a motorcycle just after he passed the Sungai Rasau highway toll gates in Klang. Investigators believe the case was related to business rivalry.
In the second case on June 28, a 40-year-old general manager of Desa Petaling survived five gunshot wounds when a gunman and his accomplice who were on a motorcycle fired at him while he was driving along the KM3.5 of the KL-Seremban highway. Police said it is believed that the victim's relationship with a married woman had led to the incident.
Both cases remain unsolved.
Sources said although there are similarities in the manner the victims were shot in Wednesday's case in Taman OUG and the other two cases earlier, all three were unrelated.
