PETALING JAYA: Following a spate of shootings lately, many businessmen have started hiring bodyguards to protect themselves and their families while those who already have bodyguards are raising their guard, avoiding crowded areas and reducing their late nights out.
A number of Chinese who's who interviewed by Sin Chew Daily admitted that although they have hired bodyguards and despite heightened security by the authorities, they would reduce their presence at high-risk areas such as places with a higher concentration of foreigners and nightspots in view of the recent grenade attack by Islamic State (IS), the daily reported today.
They also advised their children to avoid these places or not to go out late at night.
Although they are licensed to carry guns, they have approached security companies for bodyguards who are trained to use firearms.

He said with an increase in the number of shooting incidents of late, businessmen have to enhance personal protection apart from urging the police to step up preventive efforts to ensure public safety.
"About two years ago, I felt the need to hire bodyguards. As such I approached a security company and asked for those who know how to handle firearms, preferably ex-military personnel."
He disclosed that it costs RM8,000-9,000 a month to hire an armed bodyguard and the expenses can amount to RM10,000-12,000 if overtime is taken into consideration.
Star Security Services Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Tan Joon Kiang confirmed that most of his clients want bodyguards who are licensed to carry firearms but there is a shortage of these bodyguards now as it is time-consuming to apply for firearm licences.
It takes at least two months to get an application for a gun licence approved due to the stringent vetting process, he added.
