PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad celebrated his 91st birthday today, receiving an overwhelming outpouring of support and tributes from the public.
His daughter, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, posted a photo of herself and her father on Facebook accompanied by a short birthday wish.
"Happy 91st birthday to my Daddy. May you remain as sprightly and sharp as ever!" she captioned the photo, which was shared almost 2,000 times and received more than 50,000 likes.
Among the top comments on the post included netizens wishing Dr Mahathir health, happiness and longevity and some even commented on his youthful appearance which belied his age.
A fanpage called "Saya Sayang Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad" showed a collage of pictures of the former premier, along with a post thanking him for leading the country to greater heights.
"Who would have thought that this individual would eventually be able to build Malaysia from a poor country dependant on agriculture to one of the top developing nations by the end of his administration," the post read.
It also expressed hope that Dr Mahathir would be granted good health to continue with "a struggle that is not over yet".
Former lawmaker Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said on Twitter: "Happy 91 Tun. Keep up the fight".
Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, the former group editor-in-chief of The New Straits Times, also penned a tribute to Dr Mahathir in his blog in the form of a poem, with a picture of the latter in his younger days.
Meanwhile, the vocal leader himself took to social media to post a video thanking netizens for the wishes.
"Thank you for the birthday wishes. I am currently in Phuket (Thailand) and I'll be back tomorrow," he said in the short clip.
