Faulty brakes led to bus ramming 10 cars: Ipoh police chief

IPOH: Faulty brakes is believed to have been the reason for an express bus ramming into 10 cars as it went downhill on the south bound lane at KM265.8 of the North South Expressway, near the Menora Tunnel in Jelapang here, on Sunday.
Ipoh City police chief ACP Sum Chang Keong said today that as the brakes failed to function, the bus going downhill was at a high speed and crashed into the cars.
He said a 21-year-old female passenger from Bagan Serai, who was travelling in the first car involved in the collision at 2.45pm, suffered abdominal pains, while the other passengers and drivers did not suffer serious injuries.
Chang also said the urine test done on the 51-year-old bus driver, who is from Johor Baru, for drugs was negative.
He added police today obtained a four-day remand order against the driver to facilitate investigation for reckless driving under the Road Transport Act 1987.
Meanwhile, Perak traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Supt Wan Jamil Wan Chik said the the express bus driver had been issued with nine summonses for various traffic offences previously.
He added the unpaid summonses were for the period from 2011 to 2015.
"The bus involved in the collision was also issued with 63 summonses which have yet to be settled," he added.
A video of the express bus, from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, going downhill after passing the tunnel and crashing into the vehicles went viral on social media.
Wan Jamil said several vehicle owners lodged police reports at the Ipoh traffic branch office. The 28 bus passengers and the driver escaped injuries.
