KUALA LUMPUR: An attempt to hand over a memorandum by Federal Territories Umno Youth members turned ugly when they faced off with police personnel at the DAP national headquarters here today.
Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Razlan Rafii, who led the group, gathered outside the party's office at Jalan Yew in the afternoon to hand over a memorandum of protest against Taiping DAP lawmaker Nga Kor Ming, bringing traffic at the area to a standstill.
The members were seen marching from the Cheras Umno division to the DAP headquarters.
The group also demanded the Taiping MP to apologise for his remark, allegedly insulting the Malays and Islam.
Army veteran Mohd Ali Baharom or better known as Ali Tinju was spotted among the crowd and was later forcefully taken away by the police for trespassing.
When contacted, Wangsa Maju police chief Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said about 150 supporters gathered in front of the building from as early as 1.30pm
"Police officers, including those from the Light Strike Force (LSF) anti-riot squad, were on hand and managed to control the situation.
"No arrests were made during the gathering. However, a scuffle broke out between DAP members and the protesters when a paper was thrown towards DAP supporters," he said.
KL deputy CID chief, ACP Hanafiah Arshad said among the protesters were Umno youth members from KL and Selangor.
"We will investigate if there were any elements of sedition involved and also for breaching laws on peaceful assembly," he said.
During the demonstration which lasted about three hours, Razlan allegedly accused Nga of insulting the Malays with a series of "insensitive" Facebook postings.
This includes a posting purportedly equating duit raya (traditional cash handouts by Malays during Hari Raya) to dedak (chicken feed).
Another was Nga's controversial Hari Raya greetings, which Razlan said, implied that the Taiping MP wanted to turn Malaysia into a Christian state.
"We believe these statements are against the moral values and culture and we demand that he (Nga) make a public apology to all the Muslims because his provocation has hurt the feelings of the Muslims and the Malays," he said when reading out a copy of their memorandum to DAP.
Last week, Nga posted two controversial Raya greetings on his Facebook.
He eventually removed the posts which one that showed the US flag and the message "In God We Trust" which he took from the official page of Christian evangelist James Dobson, and the other a cartoon linking duit Raya with dedak.
Meanwhile, the organiser of the protest Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Mohd Razlan Rafii said it was not intended to be provocative and they intended to "beramah-mesra" (mingle) with DAP and to submit their letter of protest.
"We respect the police. Maybe the police thought that our group should not be that many in numbers. But for me, we were there just to 'beramah-mesra' and to submit our letter to DAP.
"We are not there to fight with DAP. They could just allow us to enter the building and there would be no problem," he told theSun when contacted.
