Zambry: Install more safety features at Menora Tunnel stretch

IPOH: The Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) and Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS) will have to install additional safety features at the descending Menora Tunnel and Gua Tempurong stretches, said Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir.
He said speed breakers and lights have already been installed along both stretches but added that more features are needed to ensure the safety of motorists.
"The state government proposes for more emergency bays to be constructed along the stretches so vehicles experiencing technical problems can stop at the designated places," he added.
Zambry was commenting on the accident involving a bus which was believed to have experienced faulty brakes, causing it to ram into 10 cars at Km265.8 on the south-bound lane of the North-South Expressway near Jelapang here on Sunday.
One person was injured in the mishap while the 51-year-old bus driver has been remanded to facilitate investigations.
"We understand the space constraints to build emergency bays as the Ipoh-Changkat Jering stretch near the Menora Tunnel is too close to rocky hills and ravines," said Zambry.
MHA and PLUS have since also installed light-emitting (LED) lights along some parts of the stretches.
The south-bound stretch of the Ipoh-Changkat Jering stretch has seen several accidents including those involving heavy vehicles crashing into the toll plaza. The authorities have since removed the toll plaza and readjusted the stretch for those exiting in Ipoh, and motorists travelling south to avoid collisions.
