Johor Baru: Johor Health and Environment committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat (pix) said the department is still investigating the palm oil mill accused of allegedly releasing high levels of ammonia into Sungai Ulu Remis.
"The investigation is still ongoing," he said when contacted by theSun today.
"Everyone should play their part in making our rivers clean. For this case, initial investigation showed that the effluent pond of a palm oil mill near Kluang was not properly maintained and was leaking," Ayub said.
He urged all mill operators in the state to do regular checkups on their waste disposal systems to ensure everything is in good working condition.
To avoid the repeating of such incident, he will call a meeting with about 60 mill and factory operators along the 26km stretch of Sungai Johor.
He said, "We want all the operators to comply with the regulations as stipulated in their permit."
Three water treatment plants were forced to temporary halt operations after high level of ammonia was found in Sungai Johor on June 12.
The Semangar and Sungai Johor treatment plants were back to normal operations after closing for a day while the Tai Hong water treatment plant resumed operations on Friday.
The closure had affected 120,000 premises in Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri and Kulai.
