Two UTeM staff stranded in Turkey

    MALACCA: Two Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Malacca (UTeM) staff members are now stranded at the Ataturk Airport, Istanbul, Turkey following the coup incident in that country.
    UTeM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib said they were the university's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovations) Prof Dr Mohd Jailani Md Nor and senior lecturer from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Assoc Prof Dr Azma Putra.
    He said, however, both of them were in safe condition presently.
    "When the incident broke out, they were both waiting for their return flight to Kuala Lumpur after attending the International Congress in Sound and Vibration on July 10 to 14 in Athens, Greece," he said in a statement, here today.
    According to reports, a military statement carried by the Turkish media on Friday said that the armed forces had fully seized power in the country.
    However, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said early Saturday that the coup attempt had failed and urged the people to uphold democracy. — Bernama
