SEPANG: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's proposal to only allow passengers into airport terminals has not gone down well with many Malaysians.
When met at KL International Airport today, many family members felt there were other better measures that could be implemented to enhance airport security.
Abdul Ghani Ibrahim, who is in his 70s, said the idea was not feasible for children and older passengers as it would be strenuous for them to carry their luggage.
Abdul Ghani, who was going to Mecca, said the airport was the only place for some travellers to meet their loved ones before flying off.
In fact, he said he was only able to meet his grandchildren at the airport before catching his flight.
Another passenger, Mohamad Azam Mahidin, said a better solution would be to place security posts and full body scanners at airport entrances instead of keeping family members out.
He added some first-time travellers may not be familiar with flight procedures or know their way around the airport.
Wong Yihui, 20, who was on her way to Sarawak, said retail as well as food and beverage outlets in the terminals would be affected if the proposal took effect.
"The businesses would lose out as only passengers would be the ones frequenting these outlets," she said, adding having security checks at entrances would be a better move.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said he has met Transport Ministry representatives and made some recommendations on ways to heighten airport security.
"Yes, I have made some recommendations, but there is no need for me to explain here. Let the Ministry announce it," he told a press conference today.
Ahmad Zahid had, on Friday, said the government is mulling to allow only air passengers into terminals at all major airports in order to enhance security.
