34 foreign GROs detained in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Thirty-four foreign women believed to be working as guest relation officers (GROs) were detained in a raid on two entertainment outlets here, early this morning.
In the first raid at 1am, 14 Vietnamese nationals, seven Chinese and two Thais were detained at the premises in Jalan Perai 4, while another six from China and five from Vietnam were picked up at Gurney Plaza.
Deputy Assistant Director of Penang Immigration Department Fairuz Ismail said both outlets had been raided several times before for hiring foreign workers without legal permit.
In a separate case, a total of 38 foreigners were nabbed in several restaurants and workers' squatters around Timur Laut district in an operation which began at 5pm yesterday.
They comprised 21 Myanmar men, six Bangladeshi, four Pakistani, three Indian, a Filipino and two Indonesian women, along with 4-year-old boy.
"All of them were detained for failing to provide legal travel documents,overstaying and misusing their social visit passes," he added. — Bernama
