GEORGE TOWN: Will this Monday be the D-day for the announcement on the dissolution of the Penang State Legislative Assembly to pave the way for snap elections ?
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng teased the possibility today after attending a the family gathering of descendants of Dr Wu Lien-teh, the first Malaysian of Chinese descent to study at the University of Cambridge.
The DAP secretary-general was however quick to add any such announcement is dependent on consensus between Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties comprising DAP, PKR and Amanah.
“We may or may not announce as it depends on the consensus,” he said in a press conference after attending the family affair at the Penang Institute grounds here.
The possibility of snap polls in Penang comes after Lim was charged for graft and abuse of power in last month.
Supporters claim the move can legitimise the state government regardless the outcome of the trial. Critics on the other hand lambasted PH, opining that the electorate should not be involved in the court process.
To date, Lim pointed out that the power to fix the polling date lies with the Election Commission (EC), noting that elections have to be called 60 days after the legislature was dissolved.
“If at last we decide (to go ahead), the necessary legal procedures will be carried out,” he added.
On his challenge that the General Elections be held concurrently with the Penang poll, Lim said the people should be given the chance to decide the government they want.
In a related development, his political secretary, Wong Hong Wai said Penang government leaders will be hosting an information sharing session at 8.30pm on Monday at the Caring Society Complex.
The topic will be the “Future of Penang” for state leaders to speak on the current situation he added.
