KUALA LUMPUR: In its bid to educate children on fire safety, Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA) organised a safety workshop in Cheras here today.
MVFRA founder K.Balasupramaniam said the workshop is an important initiative because fire safety awareness among children is still low in the country.
"The workshop involves about 170 children and we focus on the need to educate these kids on the dangers of even a small fire and how to face a real life fire and rescue situation," he told theSun when met at the sidelines of the workshop.
The four-hour long program which started at 11.30am features several education tracks comprising of activities such as Stop, Drop and Roll, Crawl Low in Smoke, Fireman Drag, Save a Cat, Padlock Escape and Scream Tunnel.
"We want to give every child the opportunity of fulfilling their dream of becoming a fireman but before they do that they must learn how to be safe first, only then can they take on the role of protecting their families," Balasupramaniam added.
Upon completion, children were given souvenirs, a certificate and an exclusive ride onboard a fire engine.
Balasupramaniam who is also a safety activist added that by educating children in the early stage could help save lives and avert potential tragedies especially when parents are not around.
"It is important to keep in mind that a small uncontainable fire can spread in seconds and we also encourage any other organisations to join us in organising fire fighting courses," he said adding that MVRFA is also looking forward to educate children on escalator safety in the future.
