KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Yunos (pix) has announced that he will organise a rally in "defence of constitutional democracy" at the same time as Bersih 5.
Speaking in front of Sogo shopping complex today, Jamal Yunos said the decision was made for Malaysians to defend the position of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and counter an anti-Najib demonstration.
The demonstration mooted by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Bersih, aimed at urging Najib to step down following a civil complaint filed by the United States' Department of Justice over issues surrounding state investment arm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
"Najib, who was democratically elected, should be defended by all Malaysians," he said.
Jamal then called on Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah to hold the Bersih 5 rally which she had announced on Friday.
"We welcome them (Bersih) to have it. We are confident that Malaysians will believe in the Constitution and in the next general election which will take place in another year-and-a-half or two years," he said.
Jamal said he is expecting more than 300,000 people to gather for the upcoming Red Shirt Rally.
"We will gather a bigger crowd than ever and we will paint the city red," he said.
Some 50 protesters, were seen scattered around the entrance to the mall, gathered around Jamal when he arrived at 4.20pm earlier today.
