Muhammad Syafiq put aside yesterday's poor dive to capture gold medal

KUCHING: National diver, Muhammad Syafiq Puteh put aside yesterday's disappointment in the 3m springboard, to win the gold medal in the men's 1m springboard in the 18th Sukma, here today.

The Perak diver accumulated 323.00 points to defend the gold medal he won in the 2014 Perlis Sukma.

Sarawak's Sylvester Peter Jawa (308.00) and Carlyse Chan Wee Cheik (305.40) won silver and bronze respectively at Sarawak Aquatic Centre.

Muhammad Syafiq, 21, had to settle in fourth place yesterday, collecting only 331.65 points after committing a mistake in the second dive.

"Actually, a gust of wind during the second dive put me out of position. I had no choice but to jump or else I would end up with no points.

"The gold medal today is meaningful since this my last Sukma," he told reporters after the prize giving ceremony.
Muhammad Syafiq's next event is the men's individual platform on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Lai Pui Yee, won the gold medal in the women's 1m springboard after accumulating 248.65 points.

The Perakian won the gold medal in the same event at 2014 Perlis Sukma.

Adeline Chin Wei Ling (213.60) of Selangor settled for silver while Kimberly Bong Qian Ping (192.85) of Sarawak took the bronze.

Sylvester and Carlyse paired up to deliver Sarawak's second gold in the men's synchronised platform after collecting 323.10 points.

Muhammad Haris Mohd Rizal/Tan Czyn Jien (284.82 points) of Selangor took silver while Ahmad Danish Haikal Sha'Ari/Muhammad Firas Shahrum Azam (234.78 points) of Negri Sembilan took the bronze.

Perak leads the diving medal tally after bagging four gold, three silver and two bronze medals, followed by Federal Territories (3-2-2) and Sarawak (2-1-2) on the second day of the diving events. — Bernama
