SEPANG: Fifty participants of the MyCorps international volunteer programme safely returned home today after completing their three month community mission in Cambodia.
The arrival of the second series of the MyCorps Placement Programme participants at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, comprising volunteers from various races and religions was greeted by Ministry of Youth and Sports undersecretary of the International Division, Effendi Razali, as well as their families and friends.
Speaking to reporters, Effendi said the programme that began from May 8 and ended yesterday focused more on providing a workforce to improve the basic amenities and water catchment areas in Smile Village and the Kompong Chnnang district, a two-hour journey from Phnom Penh.
The MyCorps initiative was introduced by the ministry to provide an exemplary volunteer workforce that was capable of motivating Generation Y, aged between 21 and 30, to become volunteers.
Gayithiri Asokkumaran, 29, a participant of the programme, said MyCorps provided the best opportunity to widen one's views towards the problems and needs of the world community while moving out of one's comfort zone and collectively resolving issues. — Bernama
