ICU director charged with corruption

GEORGE TOWN: A director in the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) was charged in the sessions court today with two counts of graft, involving more than RM50,800.
On the first count, Mohd Nor Rejab, 54, was alleged to have obtained an inducement by approving a RM26,162 payment voucher to supply lab coats to schools in Penang to Syarikat Nur Maju Ehsan Enterprise in which he has an interest in.
He was charged with abusing his position as the management and development sector chief of the Penang Education Department sometime in 2013 at the department’s office.
The offence under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and fine not less than five times of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
On the second charge, Mohd Nor is accused of accepting a RM24,656 cheque from one Syed Mohamed Mohamed Farook with whom he is aware that he has a relationship with his official work.
He is alleged to have committed the offence on Oct 24, 2013, at the Penang Road branch of a bank here in his capacity as the management and development sector chief of the Penang Education Department.
The charge comes under the Penal Code which carries a maximum two years’ jail sentence, or with fine, or both, upon conviction.
Sessions Court Judge Irwan Suainbon fixed RM15,000 with one surety for bail and ordered the accused to surrender his passport to the court and set Aug 30 for mention.
MACC DPP Ahmad Ghazali Muhammad Nadzri prosecuted while Mohd Nor was defended by Ashok Athimulam.
