PETALING JAYA: Despite the stream of controversy surrounding Selena Gomez's concert in Malaysia, the show went on without a hitch on Monday night, although the singer was more covered up than usual.
The 24-year-old American pop star was clad in conservative attire, donning loose black slacks and a long-sleeved black top while she entertained fans at Stadium Melawati, Shah Alam.
A post on a Twitter account called 'Selena Gomez News' said the new outfit was chosen "out of respect for the culture and religion" of Malaysia, a move which received widespread praise from fans.
One user @Adriirman said: "Selena covered every inch of her skin, she respects our culture and religion".
Gomez's concert had drawn flak after PAS Islamic Dakwah Bureau chairman Hafez Sabri expressed disapproval of the singer's "sexy" appearance, which he said would "contaminate" the month of Syawal and encourage hedonism among Malaysian youth.
Netizens described strong police presence around the venue with one tweet saying: "We hope everyone stays safe while leaving the show! There is a lot of police outside and we hope the protestors stay calm/leave."
A photo shared on fan account @GomezSource showed a group of protesters gathered outside the stadium with placards before the concert, but no chaos was reported.
PAS executive councillor in charge of Islamic affairs Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi had reportedly called on mosques in Selangor to have special prayers for the cancellation of the concert while its youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz said it was inappropriate for Muslims to attend it.
Meanwhile, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali hit back at critics, telling them not to be "over excited" by her sexiness, and assured that the show would go on as long as the organisers met all requirements set by local authorities.
