JOHOR BARU: Datuk Seri Dr Lau Kee Lee is a doctor but he still manages to spare his time to lead 17 community policing units in Muar district.
And today he received an appreciation letter from state deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad at the state police headquarters monthly gathering here.
Lau, 45, from Muar, said the first community policing unit was set up in Sungai Abong, Muar, in 2013.
There was at the time some break-ins and snatch cases, and the villagers, especially elderly Chinese, found it quite difficult to communicate with the police due to language barrier, he said.
He said the units act as a bridge between the people and police, providing an effective communication channel.
Lau, who is also Muar district chairman of Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation, was happy that more than 100 members of the units have helped the police to reduce crime in Muar.
Earlier, Mohd Zakaria said the Johor crime rate has declined by 6.64% for the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2015.
For break-in cases, there was a drop of 11.25% compared to the same period in 2015, while for commercial crime, police solved 1,546 of the 1,941 reported cases so far this year.
