GEORGE TOWN: The late Puan Sri Chui Kah Peng, wife of former Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, was cremated today at the Batu Gantung crematorium here.
Chui died last Sunday at the Gleneagles Medical Centre after a 13-year battle with cancer. She was 65.
Hundreds of Penangites, among them political leaders including Minister in the Prime Minister's Department and Gerakan President Datuk Seri Mah Siew Kong; Second International Trade and Industry Minister and MCA Secretary-General Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan; Penang State Executive Councillor Phee Boon Poh and Batu Uban State Assemblyman Dr T. Jayabalan paid their last respects to Chui.
Chui leaves behind Koh, her husband of more than 25 years and two children, son Yu Cheng and daughter Yu Jun.
Yu Jun, who spoke on behalf of the family following the five-day wake, was in tears as she thanked those who attended the funeral.
"We would like to thank all the medical staff who had assisted my mother while she was hospitalised. This loss is not ours only as it is being felt by many," she said.
Koh was seen to be visibly moved as he joined in the prayers and, at some instances, the tears flowed freely and he had to be consoled by Yu Jun.
"I have lost not only the love of my life but also my mentor and my best friend. May she rest in peace," he said before the cremation was held at 1.10pm.— Bernama
