Three employees of retail outlets jailed, fined for possession of contraband cigarettes

PETALING JAYA: Three employees of different retail outlets in Taman Serdang Perdana here were sentenced to five days' jail and fined between RM800 and RM1,300 each by the Magistrate's Court here today for possession of contraband cigarettes.
Magistrate Salamiah Salleh handed down the sentence on Muzakir, 39, and Foiez Ullah, 23, both Bangladeshi nationals, and an Indonesian, Hanif Patroye Abdul Razak, 31, who pleaded guilty to their respective charges.
Muzakir was fined RM1,300, in default two months' jail, while Foiez Ullah was fined RM1,500, in default two months' jail, and Hanif Patroye was fined RM800, in default a month jail.
Muzakir was charged with possession of 65 packets of contraband cigarettes, worth RM102.40, at the 2Max Mini Market, B-G-26 Jalan SP5/3 Section 5 Taman Serdang Perdana, at 12.30pm last July 25.
Foeizullah was charged with possession of 100 packets of contraband cigarettes worth RM120 at Green Rose Resources Sdn Bhd, No 33, Jalan SP 5/5, Taman Serdang Perdana, at 1.30pm the same day.

The third accused, Hanif Patroye was charged with possession of 38 packets of contraband cigarettes worth RM64.08 at Rahimah Enterprise Sdn Bhd, A-G-26 Jalan SP 5/2, Taman Serdang Perdana, at 12.30pm on the same day.
They were charged under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967 which provides a fine of up to 20 times the value of the contraband, or imprisonment for up to three years, or both, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the three men were detained during a raid conducted by the enforcement division of the Royal Customs Department.
The prosecution was conducted by Customs Superintendent Mohd Syafiq Abdul Aziz, while all the accused were unrepresented. — Bernama
