GEORGE TOWN: Penang police are hot on the trail of several suspects who were involved in a shoot out during a high speed chase at the North South highway yesterday.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Gaffar Rajab (pix) said in the 10.30pm incident, policemen in two patrol cars who spotted the suspicious looking vehicle at Kampung Acheh in Nibong Tebal, decided to follow it.
"Upon realising they were being followed, the suspects sped off and police gave chase," he said during a press conference at the Penang police contingent headquarters here.
He said the driver rammed his vehicle through the toll booths and fired several shots during the chase which prompted police to open fire as well.
Abdul Gaffar said the suspects managed to flee from police after the Juru toll booth.
"We cannot confirm where they are heading as we lost them after the toll booth," he said.
Abdul Gaffar however said police are in the midst of identifying the suspects and the vehicles they were in.
The case has been classified under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
Meanwhile in the same press conference, Northeast district police chief Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said several reports have been lodged on controversial rapper Namewee's latest viral video - "Oh My God" which appears to mock different religious beliefs.
He said the first report was lodged by the chairman of the Tanjung Bungah floating mosque. The video showed scenes from the monument.
"The case has been classified under Section 295 of the Penal Code," he said.
The video starts with the "azan" (call for prayer), a church choir and the ringing of Buddhist meditation gongs as well as Hindu temple bells was directed and produced by Namewee featuring a Taiwanese band.
