Speed limiters for all express buses by 2020: Nadzri

IPOH: By 2020, all express buses in the country will come equipped with speed limiters, in an effort to reduce the rate of road accidents.
Road Transport Department (RTD) director-general Datuk Nadzri Siron said the speed limiters can ensure that express buses travel at 90km/h.
"We have directed that all newly registered buses be installed with speed limiters from January next year. Old buses are given five years as it involves cost. By 2020, all express buses will have speed limiters," he told a press conference on the enforcement agencies integrated system, here today.
Yesterday, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai urged express bus companies to install speed limiters in their buses.
Liow stressed that the express bus companies have one year to comply or face suspension.
When asked to explain the mechaism of the speed limiter, Nadzri said it was being studied by the department.
"Maybe we will give a bonus of 10% (faster) from 90km/h) during overtaking other vehicles and getting back into the correct lane," he added.
The speed limit for heavy vehicles on the highway is 80 to 90 km/hour, while the speed limit on federal and state roads is 70 to 80km/h.
The Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) will assist the RTD, Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to develop an integrated enforcement system.
Nadzri said currently, the RTD was using the mySIKAP computing system while PDRM and SPAD have their own system.
