MALACCA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) launched a special operation today codenamed 'Ops Laju' to bring to book speeding drivers of commercial vehicles, especially express buses.

Its director-general Datuk Nadzri Siron said it would be an ongoing operation and not a seasonal one to ensure drivers of such vehicles "behaved on the roads".

"We have received a lot of complaints that express bus drivers are monopolising overtaking lanes. This poses a danger to the passengers and other road users," he told reporters after making a visit to Malacca JPJ office here today.

Also present were JPJ deputy director-general (Management) Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman, JPJ Enforcement Division director Datuk V.Valluvan and Malacca JPJ director Mohd Fadhil Hassan.

Nadzri said "Ops Laju" would entail intensive patrolling, enforcers disguised as civilians who will pose as passengers and also using unmarked vehicles.
He said offenders would face an immediate fine of RM300 and buses with outstanding summonses would be impounded.

On another matter, Nadzri said 2,683 vehicles were book for wrongful use of the emergency lane during the Aidilfitri road safety operation from May 22 to July 29. — Bernama
