SHAH ALAM: Police have called off investigation on the report lodged by the Umno Youth vice chief Khairul Azwan Harun, alleging conspiracy by certain quarters to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and the Malaysian Government.

Inspector-general of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pix) said the decision was made after investigation revealed that Khairul Azwan only lodged the report based on hearsay.

"We have recorded a statement from Khairul Azwan ... he could not present evidence as to what he had claimed in his report. We could not carry out investigation based on hearsay.

"Thus the police do not intend to proceed with the investigation and had stop investigating last week," he told reporters at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters' Aidilfitri open house, here, today which was also attended by the Selangor police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat.

Khalid however said Khairul Azwan was not considered to have made a false report as he might have felt obligated to lodge the report after reading news reports and stories from other quarters.
"We advised him not to do that again in future. If there is no concrete proof, please do not make any allegation. Each time a report is made, police have to investigate and if it is baseless, it will just waste our time.

"That was why in this case, since the beginning, I have said that we need to question the complainant, see what he has ... if he has nothing, than we would call off the investigation," he said.

On July 26, Khairul Azwan lodged a report against former Attorney-general Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz and outgoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, alleging conspiracy by the three to topple Najib and the Malaysian government.

In another development, Khalid said the police would investigate the media report on the case of two 14-year old boys who claimed to have been beaten by several police personnel at the Klang Police headquarters using a rubber hose during their arrest to facilitate investigation on a brawl.

"If found guilty and there is enough evidence that the policemen were involved or had abused their power, they will definitely be charged," he added. — Bernama
