SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian police cannot detain local telecommunications tycoon Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan and a senior Astro official in relation to a money laundering case in India, which reportedly involves a former telecommunications minister there.
Inspector-general of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police could not make any arrest without a court order from here.
"We cannot act on Indian arrest warrants issued against the duo as we do not have any agreement with India that we can execute their warrants of arrest.
"Given that this case is related to a civil suit, they (India) have to apply for permission from a court in this country before further action," he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya open house at the Selangor police contingent headquarters here today.
He was commenting on India's Central Bureau of Investigation which reportedly applied for a warrant to be issued. — Bernama
