BALIK PULAU: The Penang opposition has never stated they have lost confidence in Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, according to Barisan Nasional's Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad (pix).
He said the idea to table a motion of no confidence against Lim originated from the two-term head of government and not from BN.
He added Lim should instead instruct Penang government backbenchers to table a motion of confidence to support his leadership.
"We have never said anything about a vote of no confidence against him, he himself was the one toying with the idea," Farid told a press conference after attending the National Cooperatives Day celebrations in Bayan Lepas here today.
Farid, however, stopped short of dismissing the possibility that BN may table a motion of no confidence against Lim in the November session as the matter was still under discussion.
After Lim was charged with graft and abuse of power last June, Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties discussed among themselves for snap polls to be held in Penang but the move was stopped after PKR disagreed.
The failure for Lim, who is DAP secretary-general, to convince his allies in PH has resulted in some quarters questioning his continued leadership in the state.
With BN holding only 10 of the 40 seats in the state legislature, Penang legislature opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid (BN-Teluk Air Tawar) appeared dismissive of the challenge to table a no confidence vote against Lim.
"Nonetheless, the situation is uncertain as the failure to hold snap polls show not all their elected representatives support him," she added.
Meanwhile, Wong Hon Wai, the political secretary to Lim, said PH assemblymen were prepared to face any political motions tabled in the state legislature.
