KUALA LUMPUR: The new political party to be helmed by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will not meet with much success as the public is unlikely to be interested in the formation of yet another political party, says MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon (pix).
In a recent interview with theSun, MCA Youth chief Chong said the existing number of opposition parties is more than enough to go against Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next general election.
"So why do we need to set up a new one for the same purpose?
"Instead, the new party should be clear on its objectives and work for the betterment of the people as well as the nation," he said.
Chong was commenting on Mahathir's yet to be formed political party whose objective is to unseat the BN government.
He said that forming a new party would make matters worse for the Opposition by splitting votes further and causing infighting when it comes to seat allocation.
Chong also said that it appears that Mahathir and former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin don't seem to have faith that the Opposition is capable of wresting power from BN, hence the move to form a new party.
"However, we should not undermine Mahathir's popularity, but if he continues his fight against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak with his usual agenda then soon enough he will not get any further backing from the people as popularity does not guarantee public support," Chong said.
He added continuing to harp on issues like the Goods and Services Tax or 1Malaysia Development Berhad will not go far with the public.
"This is also the reason why BN does not waste time anymore on countering these allegations. Instead we are focused on serving the people," he said.
