KUALA KANGSAR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has given an assurance that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) will not have any problem to approve registration of new political parties in the country.
He said as the minister responsible for the RoS, which is under the Home Ministry, the approval would be granted if it fulfilled the conditions set.
"If there is a new party to be set up, I as the Home Minister will approve it because we are (living in) a democratic country," he said at the Perak Umno / Barisan Nasional (BN) Aidilfitri open house here tonight.
On July 14, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had announced that he was planning to form a new party that would be part of the opposition pact to face the BN in the 14th General Election.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno vice-president but but carrying out the duties of deputy president following the sacking of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said he was optimistic that the new political party would not be able to attract BN and Umno members.
"History has proven that many parties, which were formed since 1951, were not able to last long.
"Please form a new party. Umno and BN members will remain intact in the party as a team, let the splinter parties come and go, but Umno will remain intact," he said. — Bernama
