KUALA TERENGGANU: The Customs Department seized 47 smuggled cars worth about RM1.3 million from June until August this year.
Its Terengganu director, Datuk Hamzah Sundang said unpaid duties on the seized cars amounted to RM2.04 million.
He said the latest figure shows an increase from the 35 smuggled cars for last year with unpaid duties amounting to RM2.3 million.
"We have detected more than 12 smuggled cars within eight months compared to 12 months of last year," he told reporters here, today.
Most of the seized cars were from Singapore and still in high demand in the market.
Customs also seized two smuggled cars, a Nissan Sunny and Mazda 3, worth about RM35,000, on Wednesday.
Hamzah said the operation was carried out at Kuala Ibai and Kampung Bukit, Kuala Terengganu at about 2pm.
"We trace the cars parked at the side of the road, believed to be smuggled from a neighbouring country and are tracing the owners of the car."
Hamzah said they are viewing this matter seriously and will not compromise with any individuals who are involved in it.
He urged those with information on smuggling activities to report to them by calling 09-6225674 or 1-300-888-500. — Bernama
