SUNGAI PETANI: About 80% of the 117,000 students who ride motorcycle to school do not have a license, said Road Transport Department (RTD) Enforcement Division director Datuk V. Valluvan Veloo.
He said the figures were obtained through a survey conducted jointly by the Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) and Department of Road Safety (JKJR).
"The study also found that parents give permission to their children to ride a motorcycle without a license.
"The excuse often given by the parents are such as the lack of public transport in their area and busy working that forced them to give their children a motorcycle to go to school," he told reporters after launching the Kedah state level RTD Cadet here today.
Hence, he said enforcement action would be taken, including confiscating the motorcycle and issuing summonses to the student concerned.
However RTD would first conduct advocacy programmes to raise awareness to the students and their parents on the importance of adhering to road regulations, he said. — Bernama
