BESUT: A worker of Gerai Area Farmers Organisation (PPK) in Jerteh died yesterday evening after he was stung by hundreds of hornets while ploughing a farm in Kampung Gong Medang, near here on Monday.
The victim, Mohamad Ishak, 61, who was in coma, died at about 2.20pm yesterday while being treated at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu.
The victim's wife, Mariam Ahmad, 54, when contacted said her husband was attacked by hornets when his machine accidentally knocked a hornet's nest while ploughing an area for farming in the village.
"My husband, who worked at PPK Gerai, was not aware of the hornet's nest when he accidentally disturbed it at about 3pm," she said.
Mariam said her husband did not manage to run away and was badly stung by the insects but he managed to contact one of his children.
"When my son arrived at the site, my husband was very weak but still conscious before he was sent to Besut Hospital for treatment," she said.
She said, her husband was later referred to HSNZ on Tuesday evening for further treatment but passed away yesterday evening.
His body was brought back to Kampung Lapan Kotak and laid to rest at the village cemetery after Isyak prayers, yesterday.
Mohamad leaves behind a widow and 11 children, aged between 11 and 38. — Bernama
