Singapore parliament to move motion to congratulate schooling

SINGAPORE: Singapore Parliament plans to move a motion to congratulate Joseph Isaac Schooling on his Olympic gold on Monday, says Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (pix).
"The motion will be a formal recognition of his achievements by Parliament.
"I hope he would be there with his family and he said he would," Lee posted on his Facebook late Saturday.
Singapore Parliament will be sitting on Monday.
"I called Joseph Isaac Schooling in Rio to congratulate him. I told him I had watched the race live, and seen his press conference. He had put on a magnificent performance, and spoken very well to the press. We were all very proud of him.
"Joseph told me he's getting onto a plane in a few hours, and will be back in Singapore at 5am on Monday morning," he wrote.
The motion will express support for Team Singapore in Rio 2016, he added.
"Look forward to seeing Joseph on Monday and personally congratulating him!" Lee further wrote.
Lee yesterday wasted no time in congratulating Schooling who did Singapore proud by winning the country's first ever Olympic gold medal.
Schooling was a second ahead of his idol American swimmer Michael Phelps, who finished at 51.14s jointly with South Africa's Chad le Clos and Hungarian Laszlo Cseh.
With that record, he has also broken Phelps' Olympic Beijing 2008 of 50.58s.
