KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pix) today announced the People's Housing Project (PPR) in the federal capital would be implemented based on the 'lease and buy' system without deposit payments to help ease the people's burden.
Ahmad Zahid said he had directed Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor through the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to implement the matter accordingly.
"For the children of PPR residents, I have instructed that they be offered school bus services for free (to help families from the urban poor)," he said when officiating the Lembah Pantai Umno Division Delegates meeting here today.
It was also attended by Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary general and Lembah Pantai Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said he approved the application for the PPR because he understood the people's problem, and also because it was in line with the government's policy to reduce the rate of urban poor.
"Urban poor is a reality. The government is committed to resolve problems of the urban poor, regardless of religion and race," he added.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno vice-president, told Umno members that they did not have to hold government post to help the people.
"For example, Raja Nong Chik, he is among the most hardworking Umno division leaders, although he has no post (in the government), but has helped to solve many problems, among them on housing," he added.
He also promised the Lembah Pantai Umno members that a local would be fielded as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat in a move to wrest back the seat from the opposition in the coming general election. — Bernama
