GEORGE TOWN: About 50 people from the Penang Veteran Association (PVA) and their family attended a memorial service at Cenotaph, Esplanade, today to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the end of World War II.
They were there to honour those who died and sacrificed their lives in the war.
PVA president Major (Rtd) Sivarajan K M Ramanathan said peace that the nation now has must be appreciated by everyone especially the younger generation.
"Freedom and the democratic way of life that we enjoy today did not come easy and not without sacrifices," he added.
Those present also laid a wreath at the Cenotaph to honour the fallen heroes.
World War II ended on Aug 15, 1945, and it is estimated that 50 million to 80 million servicemen and civilians lost their lives throughout the world.
