KUALA LUMPUR: Thinking he was onto a good thing – read sex – a 37-year-old manager paid RM2,900 to his social media "friend".
The victim, Low, said he got acquainted with the suspect, who claimed that she lives in Sungei Wang, through WeChat on July 23.
He said the woman revealed that she is a prostitute and offered him sexual services at RM600 per night.
He then invited her to meet up, which she agreed, and she requested him to snap a photo of his identification card to make sure he is not an undercover police.
"She told me to meet up at a convenience store located in Sungei Wang on Aug 11 at 7pm. She did not show up and requested me on WeChat message to purchase MOL points (game credit points). I bought 29 cards, from three different stores in Sungei Wang, Tamana Bukit Anggerik and Taman Segar, amounting to a total of RM2,900.
"At 10pm, she requested me to pay her RM3,000 cash but I had used up all my money. She then asked me to borrow from my friend. I realised at this point I was being cheated," Low told reporters at Wisma MCA today.
He said he received multiple calls from a man threatening to break his legs if he refused to pay the money.
Fearing for his life, he lodged a police report the next day at Cheras police station.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong advised the public to beware of such scams after befriending people on social media.
