PETALING JAYA: The highly anticipated Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) executive council meeting today turned out to be tame affair as "status quo" prevailed after FAM president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah's resignation was rejected.
FAM deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah said the Exco however, agreed to convene the FAM election of office bearers in 2017 instead of 2018.
"In the spirit of a collective responsibility with the president and to respect his decision (step down), the exco decided to bring the FAM election of office bearers forward from 2018 to 2017.
"We will ask the secretariat to select a date for the election according to the FAM Constitution. We will allow the affiliates to choose the office bearers," he told reporters at Wisma FAM, here today after the meeting.
Tengku Abdullah did not attend the five-hour meeting.
Tengku Abdullah had on several occasions expressed his desire to step down from the post of FAM president after taking over from his father, Sultan Ahmad Shah in 2014.
Last November, Tengku Abdullah had submitted an official letter to the FAM, stating his intention to step down.
Meanwhile, Perlis Football Association president Datuk Rozabil Abdul Rahman was appointed team manager for the 2017 SEA Games football team. — Bernama
