IPOH: The wife of cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang today described the bronze medal he won at the Rio Olympics Games as a dream come true for her husband.
"It has been his dream of winning a medal at the Olympics... we were not bothered about the colour of the medal. Now that he has won a bronze we are very happy," said Athiah Ilyana Abd Samat, 30, when met at her parents' house in Meru here.
She said Azizulhasni, 28, was a bit worried when their three-year-old daughter, Amna Maryam, was admitted to hospital for a viral fever recently but now she is okay.
The couple have another 11-month-old daughter, Amna Khadeejah.
'We asked him to focus on the race and now he is an Olympic medal winner," she said, adding she and the children had spent some time with him during his training session in Melbourne.
Azizulhasni, known as "The Pocket Rocketman" for his small physique and lightning pace, wants to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He is expected to arrive at KLIA on Friday.
Meanwhile, his mother, Selamiah Yong, 52, came all the way from Dungun to her son's in-laws house to support and watch his historical feat at dawn today.
"Since I am all alone in my house, I decided to come here three days ago to be with his in-laws family members. All of us wanted to be together... we prayed and
cheered him right from the heats until he went onto the podium to receive the medal.
"I am proud that a son of Dungun has made the country proud on the international stage. He called us after winning the medal," she told reporters.
The family members, clad in the "Team Azizul" T-shirts, had their eyes glued to the television set at 5.20am to watch Azizulhasni outpacing his rivals to capture the third spot in the Keirin event.
