GEORGE TOWN: The Consul-General of China to Penang, Wu Jun, today contributed RM20,000 for the construction of the SMJK(C) Heng Ee branch school in Bayan Lepas here.

He said Malaysian Chinese put a lot of emphasis on ensuring the younger generation was educated properly and this can be seen with the community coming forward to ensure Chinese schools are well maintained.

He hoped his contribution will also go a long way to help the school meet the demand by the community here.

He added there were opportunities for teachers here to go to China to be trained and vice versa but did not elaborate.

"This will help in improving Chinese education," he said at the mock cheque presentation ceremony at the main Heng Ee School in Jalan Hamilton here.

The branch school sits on a 3.2ha plot of land at Jalan Sungai Tiram 1 in Bayan Lepas and will cost RM53 million to be build.

Students are expected to enroll next year in the school which can accommodate 3,000 of them.
Heng Ee Schools Board chairman Datuk Alex Ooi thanked the consulate for the contribution and said they hoped to further improve the system of education for the benefit of the children.
