PETALING JAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan said today the government will take legal action against those involved should it be established that funds had been taken out from 1MDB to defraud the company.
"The government takes the matter very seriously as the recent action by the US Department of Justice is based on civil complaints against certain individuals who are Malaysians, and the allegations make reference to 1MDB," he added.
Low, who said this in his keynote address at the Governance Symposium 2016 themed "Driving Public-Private Governance Forward", said the cases must be viewed based on the facts and evidence presented by investigators.
"The money – if stolen from us – must be recovered in full, and those guilty punished in accordance with our laws and those of the countries where the money was laundered. The government's credibility and reputation are in question, and therefore appropriate action must be taken against the perpetrators of the crime," he said.
"Our enforcement agencies and the Attorney-General must cooperate fully with all international agencies to allay negative perception and restore the trust and confidence of the people in the government," he added.
