Malacca and Penang state govts to offer cash rewards to Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying

GEORGE TOWN: Both the Malacca and Penang state governments will offer cash rewards to the mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying for winning a silver medal at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday, although they are from different states.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced today that RM25,000 will be awarded to Liu Ying for her effort in bringing home a medal.
He noted that the Malacca government will be awarding RM25,000 to Peng Soon and his administration will do the same for Liu Ying, who is from Malacca, as both had made the country proud.
"I would like to congratulate the pair for creating history by winning silver in the mixed doubles," he added in a video post on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Chan Chee Kang is a proud dad after his son, Peng Soon, won silver for Malaysia.
The 57-year-old said he felt proud as his son had played well in the match against the Indonesian pair of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir.
"This is an honour to my family," he told reporters after watching the live telecast of the match late on Wednesday night at a restaurant in Jalan Thean Teik here with family and friends.
Chee Kang said he discovered that Peng Soon at an early age had a good feel of the game when playing badminton with him.
"He was hitting the shuttlecock every time I hit it to him and I got him playing the game more often before sending him for training," he said.
Chee Kang said he will be taking Peng Soon to the temple when he returns to Penang to give thanks for winning a medal in the Olympics.
Meanwhile, during the live telecast of the match in Gurney Paragon, Hunza Properties director Datuk Seri Khor Teng Tong announced that Peng Soon will be given a RM50,000 cash incentive for his efforts.
This is on top of the RM100,000 that the Penang government will be giving him as a reward.
