SERDANG: Police are working with public university administrations to monitor Islamic State (IS) involvement among its students.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that youths can be easily duped into thinking that IS fights in the name of Islam.
"Militants will use platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to connect with these youths," he said.
He also added that the police have identified a small number of university students who have shown their interest in IS.
"Police, authorities and universities will collaborate with religious bodies to educate students on the IS," he said during the 12th Police Volunteer Corps (Kor Suksis) appointment ceremony at Universiti Putra Malaysia, today.
"Youths as young as 16 years old have shown signs of being sympathetic to the IS. One of the common things is that they will like and share Facebook posts of the IS," he added.
He also said that those who are influenced by the IS have a tendency to come from broken homes, have social problems and family conflicts.
Meanwhile, during the ceremony, a total 1,020 trainees from 19 public universities were appointed as members of Kor Suksis.
With this, Rashid said the police would willingly hire these trainees who chose to join the force.
The students are from Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
