GEORGE TOWN: Controversial singer-director Namewee (pix) was detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) after touching down from his flight today.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said 33-year-old Namewee, real name Wee Meng Chee, was detained at about 3.30pm upon returning from overseas.
He said Namewee will be taken to a Penang court tomorrow to be remanded over investigations into the controversial music video taken in Penang featuring him and three other individuals allegedly insulting Islam.
"We will apply for a remand order at 9am," he told the media in a brief text message.
Namewee has been noted for other controversies and his recent four-minute rap video titled "Oh My God!" shows a group of men dancing at various places and in a floating mosque in Tanjung Bungah.
Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had lodged police reports against him over the alleged controversy.
