PETALING JAYA: Langkawi MP Datuk Nawawi Ahmad (pix) has issued an official statement seeking forgiveness from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah for linking the King to "Malaysian Official 1" (MO1) named in the US Department of Justice lawsuit related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue.
"I have not been influenced by any party in making this apology, I am doing so upon my own free will after realising my responsibility, I humbly apologise," he said.
Nawawi said although he did not intend to associate the King with the MO1 issue, the Facebook post had gone viral.
He added that people had misunderstood what he was trying to convey.
"As a loyal citizen of Kedah and Malaysia, I am deeply sorry for what has occurred.
"The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is above political discourse and there is nothing to connect His Majesty with the DOJ and 1MDB issue," he said in a statement today.
He also extended his apology to the Kedah Regency Council over the Facebook posting and at the same time promised not to make any comments on social media regarding similar issues.
Nawawi also extended his apology to the public for causing any confusion.
He added that he takes full responsibility for the posting and no third party was involved in it.
Last Friday the Langkawi MP lodged a police report at the Ulu Kelang police station on the controversy surrounding his Facebook post purportedly linking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to MO1.
The question asked to me was in the context of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on 1MDB, which was published earlier this year. The DoJ report on the other hand was released last month."
The Umno lawmaker added that as the PAC is a Malaysian panel, he assumed if there was any mention of a MO1 in its report, it must be an individual whom according to the Federal Constitution is the most powerful person in the country.
Nawawi had received flak last Tuesday for allegedly naming the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as Malaysian Official One (MO1) mentioned in the US Department of Justice's (DoJ) report.
