KUALA LUMPUR: For student Siti Syafiyah Mohd Nor, the effort to liven up the Independence Day celebration on August 31 is symbolic of her feelings of patriotism and love for the country.
Her sentiments are shared by her classmates at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Selayang, Selangor.
The fourth former said despite being tied up with her school schedule, it did not deter her and the others from producing a replica of the Petronas Twin Towers and the Jalur Gemilang using recycled materials.
Syafiyah said she and her classmates were willing to spend the time after school to find and collect recycled items such as plastic bottles, newspapers and bottle caps to be made into these replicas.
"All students, regardless of race, work together to make the idea a reality, which also receive the support of teachers in this school," she told Bernama when met at her school today.
Representing her classmates, she said although their effort was seen as minimal, it gave them great meaning in fostering a spirit of unity and a love for the country in line with this year's 59th National Independence Day celebration.
Meanwhile SMK Seri Selayang curriculum senior assistant teacher Maryana Marpani said the annual activity involved was part of the Patriotic Month and Humanity Month programme organised by the school throughout August until mid September.
She said it was aimed at enlivening the National Independence Month celebration besides instilling in the students the meaning of independence, patriotism, spirit of unity among the races and appreciating the struggles of past leaders in defending the country's sovereignty.
SMK Seri Selayang history teacher, Namrah Ahmed said the school would also hold learning sessions outside the classrooms by bringing students for visits to obtain information on the country's history relating to its independence. — Bernama
