CAPE TOWN: South African Nobel laureate and former anti-apartheid campaigner Desmond Tutu is in hospital for a recurring infection, local radio station Eyewitness News reported Thursday.
The Anglican archbishop emeritus had checked into a hospital in Cape Town on Wednesday and was expected to be treated for a week or two, according to Tutu's daughter, Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe.
It remained unclear what type of infection Tutu was suffering from.
But the 84-year-old was receiving similar treatment to when he was hospitalised for an infection last year, Tutu's daughter said.
Tutu, who retired from public life in 2010, previously suffered from prostate cancer.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his resistance to South Africa's apartheid regime.
After the end of the system of racial segregation in 1994, Tutu headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, created to heal the wounds of apartheid. — dpa
