Top GLC official held for RM15m graft

KUALA LUMPUR: A Datuk who is senior official of a government-linked company (GLC) was arrested today by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged power abuse involving RM15 million.
It is learnt that the 41-year-old suspect had awarded two contracts under his powers namely tenders for the publication of a book of a former statesman’s biography and another for the revamping of the national banking system.
Sources said the MACC in an operation held the suspect at his office at 2pm today.
The MACC also managed to freeze about RM8.1 million found in the Datuk’s bank accounts and that of his proxies.
The man was remanded today for investigations.
MACC Director of Investigations Datuk Azam Baki confirmed the arrest but declined to elaborate.
However, he said that the operation was launched following public information on the alleged discrepancies.
“We are glad to note that since our recent arrests of three high-profile individuals including a Datuk Seri and a Datuk of government agencies, the support of the public we have received has been very encouraging.
“Many have come forward and offered information on suspected corrupt practices involving certain individuals who are living beyond their means. We encourage this and urge those with information on corruption to come to us and work hand in hand to help us fight corruption,” he said today.
