70-year-old woman from Besut, 14th victim of dengue in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: A 70-year-old woman became the 14th victim of dengue in Terengganu which led to her death on Saturday after her internal organs failed to function due to the disease.
Terengganu Health director, Dr Mohammad Omar said the woman from Kampung Nail, Besut, near here, died at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ).
"The victim did not come from an epidemic locality. She was said to have fever for three days and was admitted to Besut Hospital before being rushed to HSNZ for further treatment," he told reporters at a gotong-royong activity to fight Aedes, in Kampung Tok Kaya, here, today.
The programme was also held simultaneously at five other epidemic localities, namely Kampung Masjid Haji Kadir, Jalan Batas Baru, Padang Negara in Kuala Ibai, Taman Teratai and Kampung Durian Pahit in Marang.
A total of 1,675 cases of dengue were reported in Terengganu up to last Wednesday, an increase of 133.3 per cent from the 718 cases over the same period last year.
Dr Mohammad said the Health Department had carried out inspection at 162,846 premises so far this year, and from the number, 2,110 premises were found to be breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitos.
"All of them were compounded under the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (Amendment 2000).
"Besides that, 11,602 notices under Section 8 of the same Act were issued to premises that were found to have receptacles containing mosquito larvae," he added. — Bernama
