Personal driver, fiancee sentenced to death by hanging for drug trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR: A personal driver and his fiancee were sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court here today after being found guilty of trafficking in 20.5kg of syabu, last year.
Justice Datuk Azman Abdullah imposed the punishment on Joni Rizal Rustam, 42, and Noorayuni Kamsani, 31, a trader, after ruling that the defence had failed to cast a reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case.
The prosecution represented by deputy public prosecutor Aznika Mohd Anas called 10 witnesses while counsel Zamri Idrus and Mazri Mohamad called five defence witnesses including Joni Rizal and Noorayuni to testify during the trial which began on Feb 24, 2016.
The duo's family members were seen weeping after the judge gave his verdict. Noorayuni had appeared calm while in the dock but was later seen breaking down in tears inside the court lockup and being consoled by Joni.
The pair was found guilty of committing the offence at PV20, Platinum Lake Condo, Setapak here at 11am on May 22, 2015.
Based on the facts of the case, Bukit Aman's Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) received intelligence on drug trafficking activities involving a couple who were using two vehicles, a Mitsubishi Lancer and Volkswagen.
On May 25, 2015, police arrested the duo at a condominium's security guard post before finding 702.5gm of syabu inside the Mitsubishi and 19.842kg of syabu inside a room in the condominium. – Bernama
